How To Be Healthy, Wealthy, & Wise…

I recently wrote an article about how Benjamin Franklin was the first personal development blogger

And of course this led me to the idea to write this article…

As many of you already know the beginning of Franklin’s quote goes… “early to bed, early to rise, makes a man healthy, wealthy, and wise.”

I had a major brainstorm about this quote and exactly what it means. Here are some of my thoughts…

First of all I am not sure if the early part matters as much as the getting enough sleep part. Everyone has different sleep requirements but I would say that most people fall in the 7-8 hours of sleep a night category whether they want to believe it or not. And yes, it is possible to both over sleep and under sleep.

However, maybe the early part does have something to do with it?

So what does early do for us?

Well I can think of at least one thing. If we go to bed early that means that we aren’t sitting up all night watching tv. We aren’t up all night partying and drinking alcohol. We aren’t up playing video games. And we aren’t up doing many of the unproductive things people do at night.

Could we possibly be healthier by not doing these things? Could we possibly save money if we weren’t doing these things? Is not doing these things a wise thing to do?

Now what about waking up early?

Could we hit the gym or go for a morning run or walk if we got up earlier? Could we actually have the time to eat breakfast in the morning if we got up earlier? Could we spend some time reading about something that could improve our job situation or money situation in the morning? Could we wake up a little earlier to post a blog article we have been meaning to write? (wink wink) 😉

Will the above things help us to be healthier and wealthier? Will we be less stressed? Would it be wise of us to do such things? I think you all have to agree with this…

Not many healthy things happen late at night. And we tend to lose more money then we gain at night. Yet in the morning we see people who have habits that make them healthier and wealthier. They don’t hit the snooze button 10 times because they stayed up so late doing very unproductive and sometimes counter-productive things. The healthiest, wealthiest, and wisest people I know go to bed early and wake up early so that they can practice the habits that go along with being healthier and wealthier.

So if you sit down and really think about it like I did. You will come to realize that. It’s not really about waking up early or going to bed early. It’s about what people do at night, and it’s what people do in the morning, that makes them healthier, wealthier, and wiser for their decisions.

  1. Jeremy, I love the site. It is wonderful. And, your quotes in this post are great, too.

    Another reason to rise early, our bodies are programmed to run on light. For a long time, until the advent of electric lights, our own bodies let us know when to go to bed by adjusting to light and dark naturally. When you wake up early, your body’s natural biology is allowed to work as it should

  2. Great post, Jeremy. The importance of sleep in our lives is highly underestimated by a lot of people. Of course, sometimes it can’t be helped as work or other commitments just seem to pile up sometimes. But, by and large, if people make sure they follow a fixed sleep cycle and achieve atleast a good 7-8 hours of sound sleep every night, their lives will improve considerably.
